The Mystery of Bruce Lee’s Death

The Mystery of Bruce Lee’s Death
By: Jake Seal

Bruce Lee, dressed in the traditional Chinese outfit he wore in the movie Enter The Dragon, was laid to rest in Lakeview Cemetery in Seattle in late July of 1973. But long before Lee’s sudden and tragic death in a Hong Kong apartment at age 32, rumors were rife throughout the Orient that he had been wounded or killed in fights.

“One day, I got a long-distance call from Hong Kong’s largest newspaper,” Lee recalled. “They asked me if I was still alive. ‘Guess who you are talking to?’ I replied.”

Thus, when Lee actually did die, speculation abounded as to the cause. The rumors ranged from Lee being killed by Hong Kong triads (gangsters) because he refused to pay them protection money – —something that was common for Chinese movie stars to do at that time —to his being killed by an angry martial artist’s dim mak (death touch) strike. Some people claimed Lee was cursed—he had just bought a house in Hong Kong that was supposed to be haunted—or that he had died while mking love to actress Betty Tingpei, or that he had angered the Chinese martial arts community by teaching foreigners, and that he had been killed in a challenge match.

Many Chinese believed Lee was the victim of too much gum Ilk (intensity) in his training, while others cited drug use as the cause for his sudden demise. Still others believed that Lee’s fate was sealed at birth, that it was in the stars. And, finally, there are those who think Lee’s death was staged, and that he is merely waiting for the right time to return to society.

The facts of the case are this: Lee died after falling into a coma. The coroner’s report was inconclusive, and medical authorities came up with five reasons for Lee’s untimely death. However, they all agreed that it was caused by a cerebral edema (a swelling of the brain caused by a congestion of fluid). But what caused the edema became a matter of speculation. For the most part, the course of events on that fateful July day in 1973 can be pieced together. According to Lee’s wife, Linda, Bruce met film producer Raymond Chow at 2 p.m. at home to discuss the making of Game of Death. They worked until 4 p.m., and then drove together to the home of Betty Tingpei, a Taiwanese actress who was to also have a leading role in the film. The three went over the script at Tingpei’s home, and then Chow left to attend a dinner meeting.

At around 7:30 p.m., Lee lay down for a nap and was still asleep when Chow called to ask why he and Tingpei had not yet shown up for dinner as planned. The actress told Chow she could not wake Lee. The ensuing autopsy found traces of cannabis in Lee’s stomach, but the significance of this discovery is debatable. Some believe the cannabis caused a chemical reaction that led to the cerebral edema, but the coroner’s inquiry refutes this theory. In fact, one doctor was quoted as saying that the cannabis being in Lee’s stomach was “no more significant than if Bruce had drunk a cup of tea that day.”

Dr. R.R. Lycette of Queen Elizabeth Hospital viewed Lee’s death as a hypersensitivity to one or more of the compounds found in the headache tablet he consumed that afternoon. Although his skull showed no injury, his brain had swollen considerably, from 1,400 to 1,575 grams. None of the blood vessels were blocked or broken, so the possibility of a hemorrhage was ruled out.

Chow came to the apartment and could not wake Lee either. A doctor was summoned, and he spent 10 minutes attempting to revive the martial artist before sending him by ambulance to Queen Elizabeth Hospital. By the time he reached the hospital, Lee was dead .

Foul play was immediately suspected as having a role in Lee’s passing. Chow appeared on television to try to settle the public furor that quickly developed. He explained what happened, omitting only the fact that Lee had not died at home. The press soon uncovered the truth, however, and demanded to know what Chow was trying to cover up. R.D. Teare, a professor of forensic medicine at the University of London who had overseen more than 90,000 autopsies, was called in and declared that it was basically impossible for the cannabis to be a factor in Lee’s death. In Teare’s opinion, the edema was caused by hypersensitivity to either meprobamate or aspirin, or a combination of both. His view was accepted by authorities, and a determination of “misadventure” was stamped on Lee’s death.

Strangely, an early death was a conceivability that Lee had contemplated with surprising frequency. According to his wife Linda, he had no wish to live to a ripe old age because he could not stand the idea of losing the physical abilities he had strived so hard to achieve.

“If I should die tomorrow,” he used to say, “I will have no regrets. I did what I wanted to do. You can’t expect more from life.”

Chakras, Kundalini, Mantra and Tantra

Chakras, Kundalini, Mantra and Tantra

There have been so many messengers from the East to the West. Yet all their ancient wit and wisdom gets lost in translation. For example, now Americans want to throw out Yoga from schools and communities claiming it promotes Hinduism and pagan behaviour. Meditation is being ostracized for taking Americans away from Jesus Christ.

Well first of all Yoga was and is always promoted as a Science. Okay it is not meeting the exact parameters of Western allopathy. But it is a Science of Indian culture. Secondly, Hinduism is not a religion. There is no single Holy Book in Hinduism. There are 4 Vedas, dozens of Upanishads and Puranas, people chant Bhagvad Gita and Ramayana also for enlightenment. And Vedas don’t say every answer is in it. Instead Vedas is the only Holy text in world’s religions which says that the text is meant for beginners only and the student needs to go beyond all these texts. There is no single God for Hindus. There are many Gods, then there are demi-gods, saints, sages, rishis, avatars, angels, god-men, etc. Hindus don’t have a single universal method of worship nor a single universal prayer. There are innumerable Mantras, chants, Bhajans, devotional songs, sayings, prayers which are different for different Gods, prayers which differ for the same God in different regions of India. Ganesha is worshiped differently in Maharashtra from Tamil Nadu state worshipers. Shiva is different for North India whereas in South India he is Dakshineshwar. Hanuman is popular with North India. Krishna popular in Western states of Guajarat and Rajasthan. Durga is worshipped in Gujarat but her different version called Kali is worshipped in East in Bengal. Vishnu is not Rama or Krishna in Tamil Nadu. Some Hindus are pure vegetarians. Some eat meat. Bramhins in Bengal and Kerala eat meat and offer it to the Gods as well. Aghori sect which eats human meat from dead bodies in cremation grounds are also Hindus.

So Hinduism is not at all a religion. It is a way of life.

There are not just 6 or 12 Chakras. There are numerous chakras because these are nerve centers which influence your body, mind and soul. The 6 Chakras from bottom of spinal cord to the medulla oblangata are more significant than the many others in between the same distance. Below the spine are the chakras that give us animal behaviour. Spinal cord onwards we have chakras that elevate us from animal to human to God consciousness.

Kundalini need not be activated by some special exercise or some Siddh Guru. Some great men and women have active Kundalini from birth itself. Some acquire it without pursuing it because of their good Karma and innate spiritual nature. An atheist may also have an active Kundalini because it is a factual property in the human body and not something esoteric attained by soliciting favours from some specific God. Yoga and Vedic practices done knowingly or un-knowingly will lead to such Kundalini Awakening in any human person of any belief or race.

Mantras need to be pronounced specifically and loudly so that they effect your surrounding atmosphere. Just as certain noises irritate us and certain noises are music for us. Similarly, Mantras are powerful words, which pronounced correctly and loudly change the person and his surroundings.

Tantra is the very physical practice of all the above along with divine witness such as fire and/or water.

Muscle Movie Review: Shootout at Wadala

Shootout at Wadala

* * * * / 5

Media’s Self-Censorship in action
When this movie’s first trailer and first look came out, everyone was impressed. People couldn’t wait to see the movie being released in cinema halls. The movie is based on a chapter of the same name from the non-fiction book “From Dongri to Dubai”. It chronicles the first time Mumbai police broke the law and killed an unarmed gangster who had surrendered himself to police custody. The term for this now well-known as “Encounter Killing”.

Unfortunately, the original trailer was removed by producers Balaji Telefilms from all its websites and channels. Because the trailer mentioned the ruling don of Mumbai and India, Dawood Ibrahim, who lives in luxury in Pakistan under Pakistan Army’s protection. The producers of “Shootout at Wadala”, Balaji Telefilms, Ekta Kapoor and director Sanjay Gupta were scared shitless when the original trailer became popular for showing the humiliation of Dawood Ibrahim. So they deleted that and posted a lame yellow-livered trailer removing all references to the ruling don, Dawood.

So this movie has no claim to fame. It has changed the names of the characters who were addressed in the original trailer as Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar and his elder brother Sabeer Ibrahim Kaskar. The producer and director were scared of Dawood so much that they even changed the name of the Mumbai Police officer who murdered Manya Surve as a favour for his boss Dawood Ibrahim.

So this is not a biographical movie. It is a completely fictional movie with all its characters having fictional names and actions. All except the character named “Manya Surve”. Because no gangster exists to enforce respect and truth for this slain gangster, the chicken-shit producers and directors of Shootout at Wadala have kept his real name in the movie whereas all other characters are having fictional names.

True to the character, John Abraham rises to the occasion in the role of Manya Surve. John Abraham is the only good thing, the only watchable element in this self-censored movie.

There is action from the word go. Non-stop Bollywood action entertainer. This movie is very watchable. Songs featuring Sunny Leone and Priyanka Chopra and John Abraham in “Alaa re alaa, Manya alaa” are epic and apt for repeat viewing.

Manoj Bajpai as Sabeer is limited in his potential due to the script. Anil Kapoor shines as the angry righteous cop. Manjrekar has his moments and gets noticed even though he is given so less a screentime.

The movie had the power and potential, but it self-censored its punch. It is a great Bollywood movie but not the breakthrough movie which should have made John Abraham a superstar. When I had seen the original trailer I used to tell people this will be a 250 crore movie. But now I wouldn’t bet on that income at the box-office. It will do well, because it is a complete movie and a real non-stop action entertainer. Yet its makers were scared shitless and hence missed the opportunity to make a good movie an epic movie. It proves the hold of Pakistan Army on Mumbai businesses. Real eye-opener.

Fun to watch nonetheless. I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars simply for having gutless producers and directors. LOL.

Movie Review: Chashme Baddoor (2013 film)

* * * * * / 5

Take the Ujjwal Dey hit-or-not movie test. Watch any random 5 minute sequence from any movie. If you get hooked – it’s a real entertainer.

And that’s my review of the 2013 remake “Chashme Baddoor”. It is an all-out entertainer from start to end. Not a singe dull moment ever.

The gems that have been discovered are clearly Taapsee Pannu along with the three male friends who hit on her. Taapsee is meant for big things. She clearly outshines everyone in this movie. Ali Zafar retains screen presence in front of industry veterans such as Rishi Kapoor, Lilette Dubey and Anupam Kher. Ali Zafar is styled as a renewed Dev Anand with his dressing and hair-style clearly bringing out his natural charm. Siddharth as “Jai” and Devyendu as “Omi” are strong supporting actors in this ensemble comedy show.

The premise is set nicely. Three broke young men – two of them complete nuisances and one good-boy Ali Zafar in their bad company. The girl next door will take your hearts and breaths away. Taapsee Pannu should go on to BIG things after this thrilling performance. She is as bubbly as the youthful Kajol or Rani Mukherjee. She is as expressive as Madhuri Dixit or Anushka Sharma. She is better than almost every new actors launched in the past 2 years – male or female.

Anupam Kher makes his presence felt. Rishi Kapoor is the surprise package. He delivers a great performance as a bachelor sailor and owner of a cafe. He proves that an actor who can act will never be out of show-business.

We have seen a lot of remakes in Bollywood. Most have been horrible butchering of old legends. Sholay remade was a c-grade horror movie. Agneepath remade was an insult to the original cult classic movie starring Amitabh. I was disappointed with this same Rishi Kapoor in the Agneepath remake – the script and movie totally unsuitable to his talent. Himmatwala remake would make you wish Ajay Devgan changed his Talent Agency – he is clearly mismanaged. Ajay can do comedy as proven in Golmaal series of movies. But well, there has to be content to make a movie stand beyond the opening weekend. Remake of South Indian movies such as Singham and Rowdy Rathore however were thrilling, fresh and original in its re-working.

Thankfully, remake of the legendary Sai Paranjpe movie “Chashme Baddoor” is a complete reboot. It casts talented fresh faces supported by veterans of the industry. The songs are wild and addictive. Musicians Sajid-Wajid proving again after last year’s Rowdy Rathore that they know what the masses dance to under the loud-speakers on the streets. The songs flow in naturally into the situations. The situations are funny and priceless to connect with modern youth. The shayari of Omi alone could keep the audiences tummy flopping with laughter. Then there is Anupam Kher with his wild Mom. And Rishi Kapoor with his unique take on Hindi sayings and parables. This is a must-watch for 2013.

Whether you are looking for a weekend merriment or a weekday escape – this one is watchable more than once for sure.

Muscle Movie Review: The Last Stand

The Last Stand is simply brilliant and thrilling to watch. Arnold plays an old man who is the Sheriff of a broder town. People respect the Sheriff but don’t respect the law because in that small town – no crime ever happens – other than someone parking in front of the fire-hydrant. LOL. So the story begins with the small-town life. Then intrigue as his deputy discovers murder and something more going on private property. Something big is going down. But what? Meanwhile Forest Whitaker is great as the FBI boss transferring a prisoner and death-row criminal from one location to another. The escape of this South American criminal is delightful. It is believable and smart. Then on there is a race between, FBI, time and the USA border.

The criminal has a hostage – a female FBI officer. He has a fast car. He has minions clearing the highway from police blockades by running trucks through barricades.

Meanwhile, Arnold the Sheriff is investigating the murder. Things get bloody. Big guns and big gangsters. The FBI boss calls him and tells him he might see action of a criminal trying to cross the border from his border town.

Too late – Sheriff’s one deputy is dead. The other two think its two big for their department to handle. Arnold deputises an ex-Marine jailed for drunken-disorderly behaviour and a crazy gun-collector who has monster guns dating back to World War II.

Together the four deputies barricade thier empty town – most of the folks have gone out on official Mayor’s picnic. Some oldies remain and they would rather drink beer than hide from possible gangsters.

Brilliant direction keeps the action and storyline unfold in seamless and entertaining fashion.

The climax is epic. The Nazi-killer gun is just the tip of the gun-warehouse. Nice acting also by Arnold who plays his age and a character who knows he is old and not the Commando or Terminator of yesteryears.

It is very old school Western if you think about it. A Sheriff standing alone for law and order against big opposition with little support or ammunition.

QUOTES:

Sheriff Ray Owens: You make us immigrants look bad.

[after Sheriff Owens jumps into the diner for cover]
Irv: How are you sheriff?
Sheriff Ray Owens: Old.

Dinkum (to Sheriff Owens): Do you work out?

Muscle Movie Review: Bullet to the Head

Bullet to the Head is based on a graphic novel. Sylvester Stallone plays an assassin who teams up with a Korean-American cop. Both have lost their partners to the same criminal. Jason Momoa shines as the cold-blooded mercenary turned hitman. He looks good and has lot of screen-command. His presence is felt even in the same frame as Stallone. Hope for great things for Momoa. After stepping into Arnold’s shoes as Conan the Barbarian 3D, he is now battling Stallone.

Stallone’s character has an uneasy relationship with his daughter. All actors are perfect in their roles. They are character actors and fit perfectly into the storyline. The African kingpin is also intriguing and well-played. Story is similar though to the recent Jack Reacher movie of Tom Cruise – because the villain is a foreigner who has escaped the law to become an honest businessman in USA. The business is also the same – getting city and State contracts for civil engineering and draining their economy through corrupt practices.

But the similarity ends there – at the villain’s agenda. The movie is completely different. Stallone teaches the cop a few things about how to crack open a case. He investigates like a fifties Philip Marlowe. Really brilliant show here by the script-writer and director. Stallone doesn’t play an old man. He just plays an experienced and seasoned professional – having to carry the cop along on this hell-ride to vengeance.

The cop does redeem himself toward the end. The climax is unpredictable. Momoa shines! The axe battle between Momoa and Stallone – a macho dare – a fight to the death – man-to-man. This is also similar to the unarmed combat between Tom Cruise and the mercenary villain of Jack Reacher. So yet another similarity there.

I guess Lee Child’s novel came first and the graphic novel later. But there is plenty of differences to enjoy the two movies separately.

Stallone matches Arnold’s new action movie but of course The Last Stand was simply a better overall movie than Bullet to the Head – story, acting, plotting, thrills, etc.

QUOTES:

James Bonomo: [upon meeting Taylor] I thought I smelled a cop.

James Bonomo: Are you a cop or shrink?

Taylor Kwon: [to James after he shot Marcus] You don’t just kill a guy like that!
James Bonomo: I just did!

Muscle Movie Review: Die Hard 5

Action-Entertainment Ranking:

1. The Last Stand

2. Bullet to the Head

3. A good day to Die Hard

Clearly the Die Hard franchise is down and out compared to Stallone’s campaign with Rocky and Rambo. Both Arnold and Sylvester shine in their new roles in new storylines.

* * * * * * * * * *

Can’t see much difference from Die Hard 4.0 and Die Hard 5. Both have action and guns and death from start to end. Both have epic scale action scenes with big trucks on civilian roads. This time in Russia. Bruce Willis finds out his son is charged with murder in Moscow court of law. He lands there only to bump into his son fleeing from the law.

The witty-quips are not as awesome as the first 3 Die Hard movies. Those are must-watch and perfect.

Bruce plays a father trying to help his son who hates his Dad because he was never around while growing up.

Meanwhile big guns, explosions and dead bodies continue. It becomes monotonous – all the non-stop action. Like a Jerry Bruckheimer movie.

I watched it only in support of the Die Hard franchise and in support of Bruce Willis. I am hoping that Bruce Willis will shine in the new GI Joe movie alongside The Rock Dwayne Johnson.

Bruce hasn’t aged as well physically as Arnold and Sylvester Stallone. Willis looks older and weaker. But his face does show determination and drama. He is an actor first and an action-hero later. So he does well with his limitations.

Not really a must-watch but the action is indeed in EPIC proportions.

QUOTES:

Jack McClane: Certain death.
John McClane: Like your mother’s cooking.

John McClane: The shit we do for our kids. Yipee Ki-Yay motherfucker!

Movie Review: Jack Reacher

JACK REACHER – starring Tom Cruise. Awesome old school Hollywood Pulp Fiction. The hero isn’t on the good guy’s team. The hero saves the damsel in distress. The hero beats the shit out of the villain with bare-knuckled fists. A MUST WATCH. Based on a novel by LEE CHILD.

As with all brilliant crime stories, there is a mysterious gunman, lots of dead bodies, a thrilling car chase and an enemy you cannot see nor fight.

Robert Duvall is brilliant in his cameo.

I watched the censored version in India and still enjoyed it.

Movie Review: Life of Pi

Movie Review: THE LIFE OF PI
Directed by Ang Lee
Starring Suraj Sharma and Irfan Khan

* * * * * / 5

This is a movie in epic proportions. It is visually spectacular – flawless in cinematic rendering. There is Suraj Sharma, a really good Indian child actor who carries the entire movie all by himself – with the supporting role being the visual feast orchestrated by Ang Lee.

The story starts intriguingly. A chat about the past, the origins. The man reminiscing is Pi, played by critically acclaimed and celebrated Indian actor Irfan Khan (recently seen in the hit biopic “Paan Singh Tomar” and “The Amazing Spiderman)

As the story unfolds we are taken to a different time and place. Pondicherry in India was the French colony which still retains many of its French connections. The animals are very much significant characters in this story which shape and move it forward. The big voyage is depicted with great emotion – the turmoil of uprooting oneself from their homeland to migrate to a foreign country – with unknown future and an incomplete past.

Its difficult to talk much about this movie without causing Spoilers. So I will stick with technicalities. The colours are brilliant. The ocean comes alive. India as seen through Ang Lee’s lenses is charming and romantic unlike the true bitter portrait portrayed by other authors such as Sir V S Naipaul. Transforming a fiction novel to film is always a challenge. I believe this director has succeeded. The animals don’t look like fake cartoon elements – so all those who were horrified by Ang Lee’s The Hulk can relax. The computer work on this film has no resemblance to that movie or that director. He has redeemed himself in big-budget Hollywood productions. The journey is unveiled with narration and actual roles played out by Suraj Sharma and the animals he is with. Sometimes shocking, sometimes humorous – it is a very fulfilling and satisfying story.

Words fail me to praise the casting of Suraj Sharma. That kid is a gem of a find. Ultimately as a fellow author, I was hoping for more prominent mention of the author Yann Martel – it is after all his novel, his story – he is credited of course in the scrolling credits – but I wished more recognition for him.

A must see movie this year. We will definitely hear more about it during the Oscar season.
