The Search beyond Google

Searching the internet had never been simpler after the success of Google.com which indexed and suggested content beyond any other web search tool’s ability and better more accurate links returned through Google’s database in innumerable servers. They even cached webpages for unaccessible links. But can everyone Google.

Imagine searching for a needle in a haystack; that seems difficult but possible. Now imagine looking for a needle lost in the Milky Way galaxy. That’s akin to looking for exact and specific information on the world wide web. The vastness of the web, like space, is ever-expanding, growing and inter-linked.

To find the best possible website/webpage that matches your requirements you need to use good keywords and understand the Search Engine’s logic. Here comes some basic research that will allow you to lookup data faster and with more efficiency. Also, as always with computers, the GIGO rule applies; Garbage In Garbage Out. Without proper input there can not be proper output.

Enter http://www.searchlores.org/
Fravia’s Search Lores provides help for advanced web-searching strategies and resources for basic as well as advanced searchers.

Another good way is to use Metacrawlers or MetaSearch Engines which Search across popular search engines to return better results.

Comic Book Idol 3 shortlist

Sponsored by Comic Book Resources, this online competition sees graphic artists face off in a 5 week, 5 round elimination process to find the new Comic Book Idol. This includes commentary from a panel of judges and voting on the website’s forum by the internet audience. Screening is done out of the wave of submissions to shortlist 10 participants who will compete to work on an art assignment each week with deadlines in place.

Previous seasons had assignments such as designs, covers, pin-ups, but there has been growing demand for sequential art since last season and this will be the focus in season 3 as well. Eligibility is wide with exceptions to professional graphic artists or those connected to the many sponsors. Self-published or Webcomics artists can also participate.

The shortlist has now been announced for the 10 contestants which includes a security guard, a freelancer, an unemployed artist, an account’s assistant, a part-time waiter, etc.

Watch out for all the action at Comic Book Resources website unfolding in coming weeks.

On a comic note – here is a page full of comics to celebrate this year’s Talk Like a Pirate Day.

D.O.L. : Dead On-Line

Internet at our homes is now as common as the house-fly. We are part of forums, blogs, communities, subscribe to websites or newsletters, etc. We have an entire existence online. We live in this virtual world, interacting with other humans and sharing ideas, views, opinions and thoughts; sometimes even our emotions.

Most of these online platforms to our banter is limited to the number of people connected. It is also limited by how the virtual platform operates. For example, If you don’t login to a given free email account for over 3 months, it expires and your email account is no longer available.

Similarly for our domains, forums, etc. we have a limited life. Now of course if we choose to leave one or more of these platforms, we can do so anytime and may even say our goodbyes.

But what happens when you die offline. Suppose you no longer exist in the real world and your friend in Japan or Canada is eagerly awaiting word from you. How does anyone get in touch with people who have stopped logging in? Are these people with dormant accounts alive and taking time out? Or are they too dead to respond? Maybe they are okay, just handicapped and can’t use the internet anymore. Or maybe they didn’t care for their online friends and just logged off a bad habit.

But if this person is dead, how can anyone know? Does anyone have a backup plan for saving the online persona or at least informing interested people online about the offline demise?

It is scary that all my posted thoughts will have no platform for posterity. If you think your blog doesn’t have readership now, well even if they are real gems, with death comes eventual online obscurity. Unless you are a rich celebrity with an estate or a trust fund for your fans there is little doubt that with offline death you would also die an online death.

A risky plan would be to share passwords to frequented sites with family members or friends. This is not always a safe plan as it may be too embarrassing to reveal these thoughts as you have declared in the online platform. If anyone has a fool-proof plan for this, I would be very keen to know.

Virus Alert

There is a dangerous virus being passed around electronically, orally, and by hand. This virus is called Worm Overload Recreational Killer (WORK).

If you receive WORK from any of your colleagues, your boss, or anyone else via any means DO NOT TOUCH IT. This virus will wipe out your private life completely. If you should come into contact with WORK, put your jacket on and take two good friends to the nearest grocery store. Purchase the antidote known as Work Isolating Neutralizer Extract (WINE) or Bothersome Employer Elimination Rebooter (BEER). Take the antidote repeatedly until WORK has been completely eliminated from your system.

You should forward this warning to five friends. If you do not have five friends, you have already been infected and WORK is controlling your life.

I normally don’t like to use jokes or writing from the internet or email for my blog posts. I like my blog to be solely my write-ups. But this was irrestible temptation.

Webcomics Pro

Webcomics is a growing trend in line with self-publishing enabled on the internet. This seems a good option where talent succeeds whether some syndicate likes it or not.

Sinfest drawn consistently by Tatsuya Ishida since January 2000 is best summarized as Eastern art with Western writing. The comic strip often comments on human nature, sexuality, religion, popular culture or politics. Slick and Monique are prominent characters among others such as The Devil, God, Pooch (dog) and Percival (cat), etc. Each strip apart from its title has an unique epigram near Ishida’s name. ‘Japanese Calligraphy’, ‘You Had to Be There’, ‘Porn Script Readings’ and ‘Ninja Theatre’ are some of the regular themes. You may also like to check out the books of Sinfest on Amazon.com and his blog – The Resistance .

Wulffmorgenthaler is a portmanteau created from the surnames of Danish creative pair Mikael Wulff (comedian and writer) and Anders Morgenthaler (illustrator, graphic designer and director of animation). Each strip is delivered a single rectangular frame and isn’t serialised. This thoroughly adult strip relies on intelligent humor and bathroom humor, as well as an abundance of blood, sexual references and grotesque imagery, to create a fantastical webcomic. Its Top 10 page lists their top strips based on live voting and can thus change everyday. Their News section is also as promisingly ridiculous as the strip.

Wonderful Webcomics

There exists a beautiful world of creative, funny, meaningful comic art on the World Wide Web. If you know where to look, you would be able to locate hilarious comic strips that are regularly updated and religiously followed by its fans.

Yenny is a young beautiful girl living in Villa Los Kubos. She dreams of becoming a model but her feet are too big. Zacha is her annoying, evil pet iguana and Buke is her pet sea-turtle. Others in the cast are Kelso (in love with Yenny), Margot (rival and professional model), Tomato (Yenny’s best friend), with many regulars such as Yenny’s Grandmother and a loud-mouthed owner of a restaurant. Luckily for creator Dave Alvarez the strip is now syndicated and he had been working for DC Comics and Warner Brothers as well. He previously had the #1 selling comic book in Puerto Rico titled ‘Changuy’. The flash website takes some time to load and his blog is in his native language. There is also a forum and webstore. A beautifully drawn comic strip with the inanities of modern life, Yenny is eye-catching and eye-popping.

Savage Chickens is a unique comic panel created by Doug Savage, drawn on yellow post-it notes, scanned and posted on his website for all to enjoy. Chickens too have a difficult life and you can see the humour is clean, funny, witty and at times philosophical. The About page is useful and updated to know this strip’s long history. Posted as blog entries Mr. Savage’s fans keep coming back to comment everyday. There are the regular chickens, the Zombie Chickens, the take on singing like Barry White, the PROD3000 Evil Management lessons, the Worm, the People I Hate series and also the very deep Love cartoons. On this year’s Valentine’s Day Doug Savage posted a compilation of the chicken love cartoons . One of my favourites – The World of Possibility . I had the honour of starting the Wiki page for Savage Chickens.

Fredo and Pid’jin is another offbeat, alternative comic online though its humour is clearly aimed at adults. Its tagline says “Two Evil Pigeons. One World to Destroy.” The two primary characters, Fredo and Pid’jin are pigeons who try to find ways to destroy the world. These are mostly funny turn of events where the world does not get destroyed in spite of their dedicated attempts. It has gone through three seasons and is updated once a week with new strip posted on Mondays. Fredo is lucky in Love and subtlety is his key in betraying his pigeon pal. Pid’jin on the other hand is repulsive, evil and desperate. A recent episode had them fooling the President to press the big red button in the White House which almost caused a Nuclear Fallout. This too is posted in blog format so fans can comment and laugh aloud. I was so impressed that I created the entry for it in Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fredo_and_Pidjin for all fans to edit, update and inform the world of its eminent doom. The wonderful creators of the strip, Eugen Erhan & Tudor Muscalu, graciously thanked me here in Comments and posted an Evil News Item here. Off-beat, alternative strips are definitely very attractive; I mean politically correctness and self-censorship by those daily newspapers are just too annoying these days. Those idiots still whine about the legendary “Doonesbury”. Somebody has to fill the gap. Well beware – “We da World Enders Baby”; Pigeon in the Hole!!!

XKCD is not an abbreviation, it’s a word. Rumour has it that the creator of this unique comic strip – “A webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language” – Mr. Randall Munroe, a former NASA robotics scientist, had created this word as a meaningless phonetically unpronounceable screen name. So the humour here is quite high in quality though not instantly appealing. Drawing in stick figures the words, humour, physics, philosophy are what carry the strip to success. He is now doing this full time. I am sure NASA people miss him; I can’t imagine the office while working with such a guy whose humour incorporates science, philosophy, love and wisdom. Its not too nerdy and can be understood by anyone. It often incorporates College level Math, Physics, etc. Check out the ‘Map of the Internet’ and do read the mouse over text on the strips which are sort of an afterthought. For an instant gist of the style take a look at Angular Momentum strip .

Hope you all enjoyed this tidbit about independent creations. Get Wired, Get Connected.

CT – the Clutter Transmission

Conspiracy theories (CT) abound the internet. They have been long since the days of hacking and espionage movies. At first people worried about State controls and restrictions. With everything going digital, everyone going online; the idea of id theft, privacy breach and snooping on electronic media is a systemised paranoia affecting any and all.

These all are feasible criminalities. But that doesn’t mean you can’t shop online, join an e-group, or search on Google. The pathetic paralysis of these CT would mean that you can’t use internet or telecom or even watch cable TV. I wonder if the proponents of such theories sit in an underground bunker with lead helmets protecting their thoughts from being stolen.

“No one is out to get you”. It’s like you are talking to a schizophrenic. Only that these are educated people with computer knowledge who choose to hide their IP and then have a blog to list their insane ramblings.

There are journalists who have made successful careers out of their tales of e-eavesdropping. They mix the right element of fear, fiction and facts to create engaging documentaries and commentary on the wired world. If you are not making money out of your theories, you are wasting your time and creating clutter on our beautiful web. The key to understanding this form of “journalism” is to know their motive – infamy, money, eyeballs and a book or movie deal.

Kids who give out too much information on My Space or elsewhere are risking their privacy; but the amount of crime with relation to number of blogs and webpages proves that not everyone online is a suspect nor do they have the time or inclination to steal your profile to make profit. There are enough safeguards and policies for the buyer being aware.

So next time you read a Conspiracy Theory, remember that it is possible but without evidence or trial everyone is innocent until proven otherwise.

Concise Creativity

For the first time anywhere in the world Google created and promoted a writing talent ‘search’. The idea was to get people interested in working for Google which has stringent recruitment process.

I registered at Google WordMasters Challenge and went to the contest held at National college Bandra, Mumbai. The contest was held in 8 Indian cities simutaneously on Sept 30th; 300 participants at each venue on first come first register basis (online registeration).

I got a call to reach the venue at 9:45 am while their email said to be there by 10:30-10:45 am. Anyways we all waited till 11am for their program to start when the IIM graduate manager bragged about the Google company. Finally it was revealed to us what the contest was.

We were given 2 sets of 20 ‘key words’. We had to use all these words from either one set to write an essay of more than 150 words but less than 200 words.

They made a lot of fuss declaring that if we mention a wrong word count and are caught we will be disqualified. This for a pen and paper test in a hall. Then the Google idiots complicated the word count issue further by saying that articles and stuff need not be included in word count.

Anyways they gave us 45 mins + 15 mins to finish the competition. Only 3 winners from whole of India will be selected as winners. Maybe they should Google “Population of India”.

My entry is modest and not my most proud work.

One choice was – ‘Angry? Who Me’ with 20 words including a misspelled word ‘democractic’

My choice was – ‘Innovations’
The key words were to be underlined, here I have marked them in bold.

INNOVATIONS – Concise Creativity

Creativity is the most appealing quality to me. The power to think out of the box . A mental phenomena of original ideas forming practical solutions and novel technologies. An intelligent man may possess the power to know and apply skills but to create is a force that drives humanity towards progress.

It is not sheer luck that gives a scientist or artist that Eureka moment. It is his will; the determination to imagine the unimaginable and to never give up.

God is the eternally celebrated creator. As reflections of his image we are bestowed with the gift to view this world and translate our observations into a paintng or a poem. It is weird how some can be prolific writers or innovators while others lack the subtle creative energy to be different in their daily work or life.

If you lead such a monotonous existence, sleepwalking through life, it is time to experiment with routines & discover innate genius in you. Everyman has a unique perspective. It is therefore not entirely absurd to say that you can uniquely portay your thoughts. This direction of life is where you never take off your thinking hat.

Analyze your lifestyle choices and strikeout the word impossible from your dictionary. One who is inquisitive and innovative is truly alive. Leave horse sense to the horses of mortality.

Word Count = God knows or maybe Google

I got a Google pad, Google pen and Google keychain for my effort; we all did. ;-)
